In churches that have a picture or painting of him, the saint can be seen carrying a series of symbols that hold a special meaning, which we will explain below:
1.- The medal
The golden medal worn by the saint on his chest is an effigy of Jesus, known as the “image of Edessa.”
According to tradition, King Abgar V of Edessa, located in present-day Turkey, was very ill and, after hearing of the miraculous healings performed by Christ, he sent for him so that He could heal him.
Jesus placed a piece of cloth on his face so that his image would be imprinted on it, and he asked Saint Jude Thaddeus to take it to the sovereign. When he received the cloth, he was completely healed. This relic, known as the "Mandylion," is currently kept in the Vatican.
2.- The flame on the head
Saint Jude Thaddeus was with the apostles and the Virgin Mary when the Holy Spirit descended upon them.
Chapter 2 of the Book of Acts tells us that “and tongues as of fire appeared to them, and they parted and rested on each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:3-4).
3.- Green cloak
The green cloak that the saint wears represents hope and renewal.
This color is reminiscent of spring, the season when flowers bloom and plants turn green.
4.- The mallet and the axe
In some paintings and sculptures, Saint Jude Thaddeus is depicted carrying an axe or a mallet. According to tradition, his executioners killed him by hitting him on the head with a mallet and then chopping it off with an axe.
5.- Palm of martyrdom
The Romans considered the palm a symbol of triumph in times of war, and early Christians adopted it as a sign of victory over death.
Saint Jude Thaddeus wears the palm on his right arm because he was martyred along with Saint Simon.
6.- The book
Another image of Saint Jude Thaddeus depicts him holding a book or scroll. This alludes to the Epistle or Letter of Jude, included in the New Testament and attributed to this saint.
The text was written between 62 and 65, before the fall of Jerusalem. The letter is not addressed to anyone in particular and addresses false teachers and the purity of faith.
