It is a sacramental medal that originated from Saint Benedict's devotion to the Cross. It dates back to ancient times, and he recommended it to his disciples to protect them from evil and temptation through faith. It is used today especially by exorcist priests. Pope Benedict XIV approved it in 1742 and the formula for its blessing was incorporated into the Roman Rite, granting the medal a plenary indulgence, taking into account the stipulated conditions. It was in 1880, in commemoration of the 1400th anniversary of the birth of Saint Benedict, that his medal, whose meaning had been a mystery, was unveiled. The details we know are as follows: Front side of the medal We find the image of Saint Benedict, holding the cross in his right hand and the book of Rules in his left hand. Front side of the medal Around it we find this inscription: "Eius in óbitu nostro preséntia muniámur" which means: may your presence protect us at the hour of our death. If we look at the bottom, on one side we find the figure of a crow carrying a loaf of bread in its beak, a sign of the poisoned food it was given. On the other side, we see a cup alluding to the other poisoning they wanted to do to him, but when he made the blessing over it, a snake came out. In the background of the image, there is another inscription: "Crux sancti patris Benedicti": Cross of the Holy Father Benedict. Reverse of the medal We found the Cross and on it the following inscriptions: At the top: Pax: peace On the vertical pole of the cross: CSSML “Crux Sácra Sit Mihi Lux” meaning may the Holy Cross be my light. Reverse of the medal On the horizontal stick: NDSMD «Nón Draco Sit Mihi Dux« translates as may the devil not be my guide. The letters CSPB that can be read on each side of the cross refer to the Cross of the Holy Father Benedict. In the circle, on the edge of the medal and following the clockwise direction, the following is translated: VRS «Go Retro Satana»: Satan goes back. NSMV "Non Suáde Mihi Vána": I am not satisfied with vain things. SMQL «Sunt Mála Quae Libas»: What you offer me is bad. IVB «Ípse Venéna Bíbas»: Drink your own poison.
